Who awards medical coding certifications?
Two US organizations award the credentials most recognized by employers:
- AAPC offers the CPC, COC, CIC, CRC, CPMA, CPB and many specialty credentials.
- AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) offers the CCA, CCS, CCS-P and CDIP, along with health information management credentials such as RHIT and RHIA.

What should I know about the CPC exam?
At the time of writing, the CPC exam has 100 multiple-choice questions and a four-hour time limit, and candidates may use approved code books for the correct year. Questions are mostly short case scenarios across E/M, surgery, radiology, pathology, medicine, anaesthesia, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM and compliance topics. New CPC holders without enough work experience receive an apprentice designation (CPC-A), which AAPC removes once the experience or education requirement is met.

Which certification should I take first?
- Fresh graduate, any life science degree: CPC.
- Nurse or doctor wanting hospital work: CCS, or CPC first if you want to start earning sooner and add CCS later.
- Pharmacy or medical graduate interested in chronic disease review: CRC, often alongside CPC.
- Coder already working in ED or day surgery: COC.
- Coder with two or more years of experience: CPMA for audit roles, CDIP for documentation roles.
Does certification really change salary?
In India, certified freshers are usually offered higher starting pay than non-certified freshers, and a certification is often required for promotion to senior coder, QA or remote roles. Do certifications need renewal?
Yes. AAPC and AHIMA credentials require continuing education units (CEUs) and an active membership or recertification cycle. Staying current also matters because code sets change every year.
